Biblical Understanding of Sin

Scripture teaches that all people are sinners in need of the saving grace of Jesus Christ. While not an exhaustive list, the Bible directly identifies the following attitudes, actions, and lifestyles as sin:
  • Idolatry and false worship — Exodus 20:3–5; Romans 1:21–25
  • Blasphemy and taking God’s name in vain — Exodus 20:7; Matthew 12:31–32
  • Pride, arrogance, and self-righteousness — Proverbs 6:16–17; James 4:6
  • Unbelief and rejection of Christ — John 3:18–20; John 16:8–9
  • Sexual immorality (including adultery, fornication, pornography, and homosexual behavior) — Matthew 5:27–28; 1 Corinthians 6:9–10; Hebrews 13:4; Romans 1:26–27
  • Lust and impurity — Galatians 5:19; Colossians 3:5
  • Divorce pursued outside biblical grounds — Matthew 19:3–9
  • Drunkenness and substance abuse — Proverbs 20:1; Ephesians 5:18; Galatians 5:21
  • Greed and love of money — Luke 12:15; 1 Timothy 6:10
  • Lying, deceit, gossip, and slander — Proverbs 12:22; Ephesians 4:25; James 4:11
  • Hatred, racism, bitterness, envy, and unforgiveness — Galatians 5:20; Ephesians 4:31–32; 1 John 2:9–11
  • Murder, violence, and abusive behavior — Exodus 20:13; Matthew 5:21–22
  • Theft, cheating, and dishonesty — Exodus 20:15; Ephesians 4:28
  • Covetousness and selfish ambition — Exodus 20:17; Philippians 2:3
  • Disobedience to parents and rebellion against rightful authority — Ephesians 6:1–3; Romans 13:1–2
  • Division, stirring conflict, and unrepentant hypocrisy — Proverbs 6:19; Titus 3:10–11; Matthew 23:27–28
  • Neglect of the poor, oppressed, and vulnerable — Proverbs 14:31; James 2:14–17
  • Any thought, word, desire, or action contrary to the holiness and commands of God — Romans 3:23; James 2:10; 1 John 3:4
The Scriptures teach that repentance is not merely feeling guilty for sin, but turning from sin and trusting in Jesus Christ. Through the Gospel, sinners can be forgiven, transformed, and made new by the grace of God through faith in Christ alone.

Statement of Belief & Church Covenant

At Zion’s Hill Baptist Church, we are committed to being a Bible-preaching, Christ-centered, Kingdom-focused church living by grace for the glory of God.
By requesting membership, I affirm that I believe and support the following core truths:
  • The Bible is the inspired, trustworthy, and authoritative Word of God.
  • There is one God eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man, born of a virgin, who lived sinlessly, died for our sins, rose bodily from the grave, and reigns as Lord.
  • Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone.
  • The Church exists to glorify God by making disciples, proclaiming the Gospel, and living as Kingdom people marked by grace, holiness, and relentless love.
  • Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are ordinances given by Christ to His Church.
  • Every believer is called to grow in discipleship, serve the body of Christ, and live on mission in the world.
  • Christ will return bodily and visibly, and His Kingdom will endure forever.
I understand that church membership is a covenant commitment to:
  • Walk faithfully with Christ
  • Pursue holiness and repentance
  • Protect the unity of the church
  • Submit to biblical teaching and accountability
  • Serve the church through prayer, presence, gifts, service, and generosity
